【Gu Dian Historical Treasures】: The 1930 Rosenthal / Chopin Concerto No. 1 Original Shellac & An Unpublished White Label Disc
My hands were actually trembling a bit while organizing the shellac cabinet over the last couple of days. Looking at these two sets of recordings sitting on the table, freshly sorted, a single thought crossed my mind:
"So, history really does choose its guardians after all."
And it seems they have chosen "Gu Dian."
For this Friday night's "Rosenthal Night" (Jan 30, 2026), I'm not just spinning records. I want to invite you to witness a kind of "Sound Archaeological Excavation." Currently, there is only one seat left. I found myself wondering: who will this final "witness to history" be?
Come, let’s pour a cup of coffee and dig a little deeper this time. I want to take you, much like an expert appraising an antique, to decode the amazing backstory hidden within these "artifacts."
1. The Only "Survivor" in Taiwan: A Recording Marathon Spanning a Year
(
1930 Chopin Piano Concerto No. 1 · Parlophone UK Pressing · Complete 5-Record / 10-Side Set)
First, let's look at this heavy stack of shellac records. I have to say this with a bit of pride: This set is likely the only complete "5-record, 10-side" set to be found in Taiwan.
According to the international collectors' market, finding a complete set in such mint condition is incredibly rare.
Archives: Major global archives (like the British Library or IPAM) might have fewer than 10 complete sets combined. And those are usually "non-circulating"—you can't just walk in and listen to them.
Private Collections: There are probably fewer than 10 to 20 sets left in private hands worldwide. These are the "Top 1%" of survivors. Finding one that sounds as good as new? That’s almost impossible.
Why is it so rare? Here are three secrets this record set holds:
1. It was a "Patchwork" Marathon This wasn't recorded in a day. Historical records show the recording process was a winding road, spanning from 1930 to 1931.
1st Movement: Recorded across March 1, 1930, November 26, 1930, and even patched on March 2, 1931.
3rd Movement: Recorded way back on May 1, 1930. This means it was a massive production. If just one disc went missing in the factory, or a mold broke, the set would be incomplete. The fact that all five records have survived together to this day is a miracle in itself.
2. The "Spelling" Puzzle on the Label: Do you see the "e"? When you come on Friday, look closely at the label: Parlophone. If it were the German original, it would be spelled Parlophon (no "e"). What you are seeing is the UK Pressing. The British branch added the "e" for the English market. While the German "Red Label" is prestigious, the British pressing actually has a thicker, warmer sound. And because it crossed the sea to England, it escaped the destruction of the Berlin air raids during the war.
3. The "ID Card" in the Matrix I’ll use a microscope-like perspective to show you the Matrix Number on the inner runout groove. For example, the number 38839 corresponds directly to the recording session on November 26, 1930, in Berlin. On that day, the 68-year-old master Rosenthal sat at the piano and played the opening. What you will hear is a direct replica of the air vibrating in Berlin on that very day.
2. The "sealed Truth": An Unpublished White Label (Likely the only one in Taiwan, maybe 1 of 2 globally)**
(1
936 Rosenthal "Papillons" · HMV White Label Unpublished Test Pressing · Metal Master Direct Cut)
If the previous set is a treasure, this white label disc is a legend. Look closely: This is absolutely a unique orphan copy in Taiwan. Even globally, there might only be this one, or at most two.
The typewritten word on the label says it all: "Unpublished." This is a 1936 recording that, for some unknown reason, was "sentenced to death" and never released. It was supposed to sleep in a dark archive cabinet forever. But this disc is special—someone later retrieved the original Metal Master from the EMI vaults to preserve the archive and pressed it directly onto modern vinyl.
On Friday night, we will be among the very few people in 90 years to hear this "rejected version." Because it's pressed from the metal master, it is shockingly quiet—no old shellac crackle, just the master’s most naked, authentic, perhaps slightly impulsive, but incredibly "human" touch.
3. How Do We Listen? An "Archaeological" Ritual
For these artifacts, I’m bringing out Gu Dian’s "heavy weapon": the Den
on DL-102 SD Broadcast Mono Cartridge.
This isn't your average stylus. It’s a heavy-duty tool used by radio stations back in the day. The needle tip is thick enough to sit firmly in the wide 1930s shellac grooves, surfing over them like a wave without touching the noise at the bottom. When I tested it a few days ago, I got goosebumps. The sound didn't feel like it was coming from speakers; it felt like it was growing directly out of the air.
This is exactly what I want to do at Gu Dian: To search for lost historical ruins through the act of listening.
To the Final Person Destined for This Seat
Gu Dian’s "Historical Masterpiece Music Kissaten" is currently the only space in Taiwan hosting this kind of deep listening event regularly. Here, we d
on't talk about competition. We don't rush. We only talk about how to slow ourselves down.
This Chopin Concerto—the "sound closest to Chopin himself"—and that rare white label disc have waited in the dark for 90 years just for this moment to be heard.
This Friday night, give yourself 90 minutes of "white space." Come to Gu Dian, have a coffee, and let me take you for a walk through 1930s Berlin.
There is only one seat left. I am waiting for the owner of this precious ticket to 1930.
